SENESCENT HAIR LOSS

Senescent Alopecia (Hair Loss), sometimes referred to as Involutional Alopecia, is the general thinning of both hair diameter and density as we grow older. This natural thinning is a phenomenon that occurs in varying degrees in both men and women as they age.

We have the maximum number of scalp hairs at birth, some 1,100 per square centimetre. This is down to around 800 by the age of one, reducing around 600 by age 15 and 500 from 30 onwards.

It is thought that as we age an increasing number of hair follicles cease to produce hair, resulting in a decrease in follicular density. Another factor that can effect both hair diameter and growth rate as we age is fibrosis or hardening of the collagen structure of the follicle. This process can compromise blood flow to the follicle resulting in diminished and less vigorous hair growth.
